Exercise is crucial in life. We are built to move and be active. Existence is aligned with the fact that people prefer to skip physical exercise, citing the most mundane reasons. There are instances however, wherein exercise is going to do more harm than good. It is essential for us to understand these types of conditions for us to be able to maximize the benefits of working out. Have time to listen to what your body dictates. You have a fever or a persistent cough. A fever is a sign that your body is fighting an infection. Even if it is just low fever, you still can't exercise during this period. Exercising might increase a previously elevated body temperature and can lead to heatstroke. When you have fever, working out would be additional stress in your body. And because body liquids decrease when you have a fever, you have the possibility to suffer from dehydration. Regardless of the presence of fever, persistent cough may convey respiratory infection.

You have nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Any one of these simple conditions would communicate that you should refrain from exercising. Vomiting and diarrhea may lead to dehydration and you need to conserve your bodily fluids. Exercising raises body temperature as well as further depletes your body liquids. Avoid exercising until symptoms of nausea or vomiting, vomiting and diarrhea disappears and you are totally rehydrated. You can avoid exercise related dehydration by drinking water before, during and after a workout. Avoid drinks that contain caffeine and alcohol two hours prior to exercise because of their diuretic effect.

Your old injury bothers you, you have a backache or you felt a persistent, sharp pain the last time you worked out. These conditions may need rest and a doctor's advice. It is expected that you may feel some muscle soreness a day or two after you work out but it is never ok to feel pain. This is not a good sign and you have to see a doctor to rule out an injury. Bear in mind that pain is a signal that something is wrong. If you have a backache, you can take it easy for a few days and observe what movements trigger the pain. Avoid these movements for a few days but if symptoms persist you have to see a doctor.

These are just some of the conditions that prohibits us from working out. There are numerous other people that are equally serious or even more so. Just like what I have said, you need to listen to your body and concentrate on what it tells you. We will then be able to save ourselves a lot of grief.
