People come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Generally, there are three accepted body types. The mesomorph, the ectomorph and the endomorph. Learning to which type you belong helps in determining which plan of action along with the fitness and diet program that will give you wonderful results. Body types are generally genetic in nature. Different body types would require a variety of exercise programs if one's goal is to lose pounds and remold the body. It is rare to find a person who exemplifies a perfect body type. Generally, people would display characteristics from each body type despite the fact that one type will dominate. Later on, the dominant body type would tend to be the basis of how you will determine which fitness program or diet plan will suit you best.

The mesomorphs are lean, muscular and athletic looking. They find it very easy to pump up their muscles quickly and easily plus the advantage of possessing a rapid metabolism. They usually have rectangular shapes with well defined chests and shoulders over taut abdomens. Hips are generally as wide as their shoulders with well toned calves, buttocks and thighs. Though mesomorphs look like they have the best body type, problems may arise when the mesomorphs begin to develop a sedentary lifestyle and consume foods rich in fats and carbohydrates. Mesomorphs need to balance themselves between their exercise regimen which includes cardio and weight training along with a healthy diet.

The ectomorph is distinct with its slim body along with long arms and legs plus narrow hips. Often tall, ectomorphs are lithe with fragile bone structure that puts them at risk whenever they join sporting activities. More often than not, they have lesser muscles and fat compared to people of other body types and are envied because they can eat all they want without even gaining weight. Ectomorphs will undeniably benefit from exercise programs which aim to increase muscle density. Basic strength training exercises like the bench press, squats and deadlift are always part of their fitness plan. It is advised to avoid aerobic exercises when attempting to gain weight and it should be at a minimum if trying to maitain weight. Diet should be consist of high protein, high fat, and high carbohydrates to keep energy levels at a maximum and also support muscle repair.

More often than not, endomorphs have the ability to store higher amounts of fat. Female endomorphs store fat in their butts, hips and legs while their male counterparts collect it in their abdomen. The endomorph's body can be best described as pear shaped, with small to medium bones and muscles that are not well defined. They are at a higher risk of developing cancer and other cardiovascular diseases. Endomorphs need regular (daily) aerobic exercises and weight training with high repetitions to encourage the development of muscles which will improve their metabolism. Additional activities like walking, doing household chores, gardening, etc. that will help you lose weight is helpful. The endomorph's diet should be low fat, low carbohydrates and high protein broken down into small frequent meals.

Comparing the three body types, it is easy to see which is the most ideal. Body types, however, cannot be changed, but it can be balanced out if you know its nature and the best way to handle it.
